What to Read: Zero to Zillionaire
Is it really true that marketing people don't do math? Of course not! (Although it might be
closer to the truth to say that marketing people don't like to do math). But we all know as
business owners, directors and managers that we need to make sure our marketing budgets are
livable and workable. (Yes, you need to have a marketing budget!) And sometimes that can be
a little stressful.
So this month I recommend you read Chellie Campbell's Zero to Zillionaire: 8 Foolproof Steps
to Financial Peace of Mind. Rather than another long lecture on how to build monetary wealth,
Campbell gives you eight strategies to accumulate emotional and spiritual wealth while
simultaneously saving and spending money. And she begins with this Talmudic quote: "A
person will be called upon to account, on Judgment Day, for all permitted pleasures he might
have enjoyed but did not."
Keep track of your PR results with Google Alerts
It used to be (in the old days) that we hired a newsclipping service to keep track of specific
media items (like when an article would appear in the paper with your name on it).
Now, one of the easiest and cheapest (can you say, "F*R*E*E?") things you can do to stay on
top of your news clippings is to use Google's free Alerts program. I use it to keep tabs on
how my clients (and my own company) are faring in the news.
According to Google, the Alerts program is handy for:
- monitoring a developing news story
- keeping current on a competitor or
industry - getting the latest on a celebrity or event
- keeping tabs on your
favorite sports teams
Just remember that to get the best results, you should put quotation marks around your search
term (e.g. "Social Good Marketing" instead of Social Good Marketing).
You can choose from getting just an e-mail reporting on news, blogs, web sites, groups -- or,
get the comprehensive report that includes all of the above. You can also choose how often
you get the reports. (Hint: once a day is your best bet for keeping current while avoiding
e-mail overload).
If you any questions about setting up your own Google Alerts (or why it's important to
monitor the news), please don't hesitate to contact us. We'll get you the answer you need, and
you may even see your question in a future issue of Social Goodies.

After my fist meeting with Ms. Silvestre I implemented
several of her suggestions ... and received immediate
visibility that produced a very positive response for us. I
am very excited to be working with Ms. Silvestre -- her
vision, energy and insight and have put her on
retainer and I look forward to more expansion and growth.
